September is "trophy time." In the month September the tiny king salmon stocked by the Indiana DNR stage near shore as mature adults, ready to make their spawning run. They are most active "by the dawn's early light. They are tough to hook, tough to fight to the boat, but the reward is the biggest, meanest salmon the Great Lakes can offer.

About the Boat: BROTHER NATURE

When I bought the Brother Nature and set it up for fishing Lake Michigan it was the 5th boat I outfitted for Great Lakes fishing. It's set up and equipped perfectly for this type of fishing. Though it's smaller than most of the "cabin cruiser" type boats pressed into service by other Great Lakes charters, It was designed for salt water use and has proven to be a safe and stable platform in Great Lakes conditions. It was built as a fishing boat and actually features more room per person in the "fishing zone" than boats almost twice the size. The "Bro" is fully equipped with redundant systems featuring modern electronics, navigation, tackle, lures and riggings.

About Mike

Captain Mike has been fishing Lake Michigan over 35 years, and has been a charter captain for 19 of those years, becoming a full-time captain in 2009. He specializes in smaller sized groups and sets his prices to encourage couples and small families to be able to experience the fun and excitement of Great Lakes fishing. Put Captain Mike's experience and skills to work for you.

BROTHER NATURE Location

Great Lakes , Indiana , Portage , Portage Public Marina

Arrival Information

I primarily fish out of Northwest Indiana ports, primarily the East Chicago Marina in early part of the season and the Portage Public Marina in late spring and through the summer months. Most trips originate around sunrise. I suggest five hour trips in early spring when we are apt to be fishing quite near the shore and six hour late spring and summer trips. I furnish all tackle. I sell single day fishing licenses on the boat. All a customer needs to bring is personal snacks and drinks as well as proper clothing.
Contact SAFC support for any arrival questions.

What Others are Saying about Great Lakes fishing with Mike

A captain's captain

July 23, 2016

I know I’m with the right captain when all the other captains call him for advice. We hit fish as soon as the lines were set and apparently, others didn’t. When asked, Captain Mike told the other guys what lures were working and coached them with other details. Soon everyone around us were catching fish as fast as we were. I was amazed we could use as many lines as we did without any tangling. The boat was well organized and clean and the captain was ready and waiting when we all arrived. Captain Mike didn’t seem too concerned about getting back to the marina on the dot and we got almost an extra hour for free! Thanks for loaning me your sweatshirt, Mike (it’s cooler out there than you’d think).

Biggest Fish I've Caught

July 7, 2016

I didn’t think I’d really like enjoy trolling, but between the divers, downriggers, planer boards and using regular line, wire and lead core line, there was never a dull moment. Catching the biggest fish I ever caught, a 17 pound lake trout was just icing on the cake. Can’t wait to come back next summer. Maybe I’ll catch a steelhead!

The Best

June 21, 2016

The weather was perfect and we were able to safely motor 12 miles offshore to water 100 feet deep. Our first bite came before even all the lines were set. Captain Mike said that was a good sign and he was right. Everyone in the group caught some nice lake trout and we even boated some salmon and a steelhead. I was a bit apprehensive when Captain Mike said we were heading offshore to Michigan waters. He sold us Michigan one-day licenses right on the boat and even though the Brother Nature is not a large cabin cruiser, I felt safe and comfortable all morning long.

Real Experience

April 9, 2016

Captain Mike consistently put us on fish during the trip. The other boats fishing near us didn’t seem to be having nearly as much success. I liked the fact Captain Mike explained how to set lines and lures so I felt like I was actually fishing instead of just being taken fishing and allowed to reel in the fish that happened to bite.
